Partial Knee Replacement or Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty is an alternative medical procedure for total knee replacement that is use for curing arthritis in either of the knee parts in which the damaged elements of the knee are changed. Partial knee replacement procedure results in minimising the pain and recovery period, especially in people with or above 75 years of age. In this surgery, the surgeon might set up the surgical instruments to identify the amount of bone to be eliminated. The surgeon uses smaller incision of 3-4 inches as compare to incision use during total knee replacement. After deciding the proper size for implantation, the surgeon will place the implant on the edges of the bone which is fixed firmly with pegs. Lastly, the surgeon will secure the wound with stitches. Since, it does not damage the knee cap, resulting into faster recovery. Other additional and important advantages of Partial knee replacement include; improved joint mobility, reduction in blood loss during the procedure, lessening the amount of time spent by patient in hospital which eventually reduces the cost.
